Mangaluru: After a week-long spell of heavy rains and cloudy skies, the residents of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada woke up to sunny skies on Tuesday morning.
The incessant rainfall in the coastal districts subsided on Monday. Only some areas in both districts received heavy rainfall, while others experienced sunny weather for some time.
IMD revised its earlier ‘Red Alert’ and downgraded it to an ‘Orange alert’ on Monday evening. Good rainfall is likely on Tuesday. The orange alert will remain in place till Saturday morning, it said.
In a major respite, the water level of the rivers, which were flowing close to the danger mark, also decreased. As compared to the earlier week, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received less rainfall on Monday.
The repair work on the Agumbe Ghat road is still in progress. The work is being slowed down as the unstable slushy soil is sliding onto the road continually. On Monday morning, the road was opened for light traffic. Heavy vehicles are still barred entry.
The week-long heavy downpour has left behind a trial of destruction in the districts. There were reports of damage to several houses due to landslips and wall collapses in both districts.
