Surathkal: A couple committed suicide fearing COVID-19 and Black Fungus infection.
The incident occurred at Kulai Chitrapur here.
The deceased have been identified as Ramesh Suvarna and Gunavati Suvarna.
Before the act, husband Ramesh Suvarna had called Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar and informed him.
Shashikumar immediately a police team to the spot, but the couple had hanged themselves before they reached the house.
A suicide note written by Gunavati states, “When I saw that people lost their eyes and other body parts due to Black Fungus, I was very afraid of the changes in my health. My husband has also been showing COVID-19 symptoms for three days and we have come to the conclusion that we don’t want to live at all. My parents have now recovered from a COVID-19 infection. My mother’s recovery was very difficult. So my parents should not be troubled to conduct or attend our funeral. Hindu organisations’ leaders Sharan Pumpwell and Satyajit Surathkal should conduct our funeral as decided by my husband and me. We are leaving Rs 1 lakh for that purpose.”
Suicide is preventable. If you get any such thoughts, consult or seek expert help.
