Surathkal: Discarded chemicals stored in drums at a scrap dealer’s yard caught fire at Katla Cross here on Thursday.
Local residents, who noticed the fire, came out of their houses and took action to douse the flames. Smoke and soot from the fire spread to nearby houses and apartments inconveniencing residents.
Locals said the scrap shop is situated in the middle of a residential layout. It processes chemicals as well as discarded waste in the yard. Objections were raised against the operation and complaints were made to the MCC officials, however, no action has been taken so far, they alleged.
The local residents requested the City Corporation to immediately order the relocation of this yard for ensuring the health and safety of the residents.
