Surathkal: Unique biological phenomenon turns sea green

Team Udayavani, Sep 16, 2020, 1:46 PM IST

Surathkal: Two beaches here, Hodabettu and Mukka, turned green on Tuesday, September 15 due to a biological effect caused by the weather.

Photos of the sea taken during the night also made it look blue.

It is reported that heavy rains from some days have caused the sea to be inundated by a highly sensitive algae which often causes the water’s colour to change.

Experts believe that it is only visible on the shore of the sea.

However, MLA Dr Bharath Shetty Y asked to check whether sea pollution could be the cause for the colour change. Accordingly, a team from the State Pollution Control Board officer Keertikumar collected water from the sea and sent it to the lab for testing.

The Coast Guard too, it was stated, had collected samples for pollution testing.

Gangadhar Hosabettu, former president of the Mogaveera Mahajan Sangha stated that changing of colour of seawater could be from pollution. Sea pollution already causes problems for fishermen’s fishing nets. Appropriate action is needed on this.
