Former India cricketer Suresh Raina drew flak on the internet following one of his comments during a commentary stint in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League.
Raina is a part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League. He was asked by the TNPL commentators about his connection with Chennai and to which he replied, “I think I’m also Brahmin. I have been playing since 2004 in Chennai. I love the culture, I love my teammates.”
This resulted in Raina receiving widespread backlash on social media for his casteist comments during the TNPL commentary.
@ImRaina you should be ashamed yourself.
It seems that you have never experienced real Chennai culture though you have been playing many years for Chennai team. https://t.co/ZICLRr0ZLh

Chennai culture is usually projected as Tamil Brahmin culture in some circles, Chennai Express etc.
Filter coffee, Mylapore, Curs Rice with Maggi. Maybe Raina thought that this will help him get close to fans. https://t.co/ZihzCyilaI

Suresh Raina could have just said "I think I'm also quite ignorant and tone deaf."https://t.co/SfwZiE9tGi

Revealing your caste identity on national media nothing but wants show your supremacy by birth.
If you watch the video it's clear that no need to reveal his caste yet he did.
Embracing Chennai culture is not embracing Brahmin culture. Chennai is more than that.

Typical erroneous stereotyping where they think most South indians are Brahmins…..

Raina announced his retirement from international cricket last year on August 15. He has ruled out the possibility of playing for any other franchise again other than three-time champions CSK.
