Talapady: Police resort to lathi charge after clashes erupt between locals, UDF supporters

Mangaluru: A tense situation prevailed at Talapady here after clashes broke out between locals and UDF supporters following which the police was forced to order lathi charge in-order to bring the situation under control.
Earlier in the evening, UDF supporters had taken out a rally to celebrate victory of Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan in Kasargod. Two UDF supporters from this group reportedly crossed over into the Karnataka-Kerala border and came to Talapady shouting slogans with Muslim League flags in their hands.
The locals objected to their sloganeering and sent them back but no later a larger group of UDF supporters on bikes arrived at Talapady tollgate with Muslim League flags in their hands. The situation spiralled out of hand and protestors began pelting stones at each other. A bus was also reportedly damaged in the incident.
Ullal police rushed to the spot and resorted to lathi charge to control the situation.
Police commissioner Sandeep Patil, DCP Hanumantharaya and other police officers visited the spot to assess the situation.
Security has been increased to avoid any untoward incident.
