Earlier in the evening, UDF supporters had taken out a rally to celebrate victory of Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan in Kasargod. Two UDF supporters from this group reportedly crossed over into the Karnataka-Kerala border and came to Talapady shouting slogans with Muslim League flags in their hands.

The locals objected to their sloganeering and sent them back but no later a larger group of UDF supporters on bikes arrived at Talapady tollgate with Muslim League flags in their hands. The situation spiralled out of hand and protestors began pelting stones at each other. A bus was also reportedly damaged in the incident.

Ullal police rushed to the spot and resorted to lathi charge to control the situation.
