Thamarassery landslide; 6 dead, 14 missing

Kasaragod: On Thursday morning, the increase in rainfall in Kerala led to a sudden landslide at Thamarassery which killed 6 people and 14 members of three families have gone missing.
The missing people include 4 members from the family of Abdul Rahman, 7 members from the family of Hasan, and three other individuals, all residents of Thamarassery Kattipaara in Kallikote district. Foru houses here have been covered by the landslide here.
The incident took place on Thursday in the morning at 5:30am. The landslide has occurred at close to 20 different locations at this region due to which 22 houses have collapsed. Also the water flowing along the two rivers has risen to dangerous level giving rise to the fear of floods.
All educational institutions in Kallikote were given holiday on Thursday by the order of the district commissioner. Schools in Vellarikundu taluk of Kasaragod district were given holiday on Thursday. The seas along the coast of Kerala have turned violent which has given rise to the fear of sea erosion. At some places along the coast, the water has entered houses and caused disasters.
A landslide has reportedly occurred at Kalladikode in Palghat district and damaged many houses here. Many families from here have been relocated to a safe location. One person drowned after the boat he was travelling in toppled at Ponnani in Malappuram district. Fear of possible landslide has risen along the rainforest region of Kannur district. Two roads here have been destroyed by the flowing rain water. 52 families in Idukki district have been relocated. Most of the dams in the state have reached full capacity and has terrified the residents in the vicinity.
Rainfall hinders operations
The police, fire brigade and members of the disaster relief team are continuously indulged in the relief work. But the rain and flood is causing hindrance to the relief work. All the roads including the national highways have been inundated by rainwater. A girl child Apsa lost her life to natural calamity in this region on Wednesday. Many more disasters have taken place a even more places in Kallikote district.
