Vijayapura: The lion’s share given to the Patils in the distribution of tickets is indicative of their dominance in the North Karnataka region. Close to 50 Patils are contesting in North Karnataka, from parties and as independent candidates, including 12 from Vijayapura. The district witnessed 15 Patils competing in the 2013 elections and 17 in the 2008 elections. The participation of the Patils is also observed in the gram, taluk and zilla panchayats.
Patil is a very common surname in North Karnataka which creates a lot of confusion in remembering the candidates. So they add the names of their native villages to their first names, such as, A.S. Patil (Nadahalli) from BJP, Rajugouda Patil (Kudarisalotagi) from JD(S) and BS Patil (Yalagi) from the Congress.
It is said that the Patils have held positions of leadership right from the time of Independence because of their superior financial position. Though the name is associated with the Lingayats, Patils can also be found among Brahmins, Muslims and many other castes. Such factors gives them a huge advantage over other candidates, increasing their chances of getting elected.
