Udupi-based Sulatha’s accomplishment has no parallel in the recent past. She has been winning medals in athletics even after crossing the age of 50.
68-year-old Sulatha Kamath has been an active sportswoman since her school days and at the time of writing this article, she said she was preparing for an athletics meet in Bengaluru and another one in Sri Lanka both happening this month.
Speaking to Udayavani.com on the occasion of International Women’s Day she said that though she is positive about the prospects of women in the country, however, she still doesn’t see any drastic change occurring in the mentalities of women especially regarding sports.
“The present generation has almost become fused with their mobile phones and other gadgets. Sometimes I think it could be impossible for this generation to achieve at least a minimal level of fitness let alone compete and win in sports,” she said.
She however is still upbeat that the system could change and advises girls and women to partake equally in sports and athletics as they would do in academics.
Another problem she spoke about is the addiction to liquor by the youth.
She says that she had written an article about alcohol addiction a few years ago as to how it destroys even the fittest and sportiest of bodies.
She fears that no amount of physical activity can change the damage that alcohol causes and prays that youngsters never become fully controlled by this poison.
