Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the state government that failed to provide water relief during the drought is now ready to provide liquor to people.

He said that the government must be labeled as a “Sarai(liquor) Guarantee Government.

Taking to social media in a series of tweets, Bommai expressed his dismay over government’s decision to open liquor shops at the panchayat level.

“It is a big tragedy that the government has not provided water during the drought,” he said.

He further questioned the government’s moral standing, pointing to its  He said that the government grants a Rs 2,000 allowance to women as part of the guarantee scheme and recover the same amount from their husbands by facilitating liquor sales.

Bommai said, “It is ridiculous” regarding the government’s decision to open government liquor bars in response to the Excise Minister’s claim that it was aimed at curbing the sale of illegal liquor in villages. He further questioned the efficacy of this approach, asking, “If illegality cannot be stopped, what will your department do?”

Additionally, Bommai criticized the government’s tactics within the guarantee scheme, noting that they had led to conflicts within families. He warned, “If the government resorts to selling liquor for revenue, women who receive government guarantees will hold them accountable,” implying potential consequences for the government’s actions.
