Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that those who speak the truth are often silenced in today’s society.
He was speaking after attending the Jayanti ceremony of Basavanna, a social reformer from the 12th century, in Koodalasangam.
Gandhi lauded Basavanna during his address for his unwavering fortitude in the face of opposition and his fight for truth and democracy.
Gandhi said, ” It is important question oneself and be brave enough to speak up against exploitation and wrongdoing, even if it means going against the norm. In today’s society, individuals who speak the truth are frequently shunned and silenced.
“Basavanna’s commitment to self-reflection and questioning was evident from a young age, as he refused to wear the traditional janivaar at the age of 8. When his friend was attacked, he became aware of the persecution faced by certain members of society, prompting him to ask himself difficult questions about casteism, politics, exploitation, and the wider society. Many people still find inspiration in Basavanna, who is renowned for his opposition to the caste system and support of social change,” he added.
Gandhi offered flowers at Basavanna’s idol, honoring his courage and dedication to his principles.
