Tipu Jayanthi observed in M’luru amid tight security

Mangaluru: The Tipu Jayanthi programme, organised by the district administration was inaugurated by MLC Harish Kumar in the absence of DK District in-charge Minister UT Khader.
The event was held at the Zilla Panchayat Auditorium in the city on November 10, Saturday amid tight security arrangements. Around 70 protestors were detained by the police this morning for violating the prohibitory orders imposed in the area and trying to block the official celebrations.
Kumar, in his inaugural address said that the 18th-century ruler of Mysore was a “freedom fighter” who sacrificed his life for the cause of his motherland. He also stated that there was no compulsion on anyone to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi.
Presiding over the event, MLC Ivan D’Souza described Tipu as one of the greatest leaders of India. Stating that Tipu should not be labelled to a particular community, Ivan said that those protesting the celebrations were not aware of the history of Tipu and other freedom fighters.
Dr M A Uday Kuma delivered a talk on Tipu and his achievements. Mayor Bhasker K, Deputy Mayor Mohammad Monu, City Police Commissioner T R Suresh, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, SP Ravikanthegowda, ZP CEO Selvamani and others were present.
