UK gold medalist Tom Daley was spotted knitting in the stands while watching the women’s 3m springboard diving final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Sunday, August 2.
Soon social media was flooded with images of the 27-year-old knitting with needles and purple wool in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
The picture of Daley wearing his Team GB kit along with a mask while knitting merrily has gone viral. The official account of the Olympics shared the pictures, and wrote, “Oh, this? Just Olympic champ@TomDaley1994 knitting in the stands while watching the diving.”

The image was also shared by the official account of Team GB — Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team. They tweeted, “Nothing to see here – just @TomDaley1994having a knit at the diving,”

Daley himself took to Instagram to reveal the reason behind the knitting, he showed off his creation through a video by saying that he sewed a pouch to protect his gold medal from scratches.

He told followers on his Instagram, “The one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching.”
