Torching of shop, vehicles in Gangolli: Convicts get 7-years RI

Kundapura: The Additional District and Sessions Court judge Prakash Khandre on Monday sentenced two persons, convicted of setting ablaze a shop, a godown and vehicles at Gangolli here, in the year 2015, to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a penalty of Rs 35,000 on them.
The convicted have been identified as Muhammad Junaid and Welding Jaffer.
On Jan 21, 2015, Junaid and Jaffer had set fire to a shop and a godown belonging to Venkatesh Shenoy even as the latter pleaded with them not to do so. Later they even torched cars that were parked there. The police had arrested the duo after examining the CCTV footage and submitted a charge sheet to the court.
The judge upheld arguments put forth by public prosecutor Prakash Shetty and convicted the accused on December 5. The quantum of punishment was announced on December 10.
As per the judgement, the convicted have to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment and pay Rs 5,000 penalty under section 451, seven years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine under Column 436 and two years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10,000 under Column 427.
