Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to rename Mangaluru Town Hall after Kudmul Ranga Rao, a social reformer of yesteryears who worked for the welfare of the downtrodden in the coastal district.
The social reformer from Kudmul Village in Dakshina Kannada district established the Depressed Classes Mission in 1897 to empower the backward classes socially. Various dalit organizations and the BJP SC Morcha had demanded that the Town Hall be renamed after the social reformer Kudmul Ranga Rao.
Renaming ceremony
On Tuesday, Mayor K. Bhaskar Moily informed reporters that the town hall will be renamed as ‘Kudmul Ranga Rao Purabhavana’ at the ceremony to be held at the town hall which will be attended by the urban development and housing, and district in-charge minister U T Khader as the chief guest. The programme will be presided by Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamanth, said the mayor.
Renovated town hall
Three years ago, the town hall had been renovated by giving it a facelift with new chairs with recline, a central AC, lighting, permanent sound system, eco-proof walls and ceilings.
