The government launched the world’s largest vaccination drive to combat the COVID-19 pandemic but despite the initiative, the programme has been constrained with glitches when it comes to booking the vaccine slot on the state-run Cowin website.
Out of the 138 crore population, only 20 crores have been vaccinated.
In order to help more people get the vaccine, companies like Paytm, Jio, Airtel have introduced tools in their respective mobile apps to find the nearest vaccine centres.
Sushrut Kasture, a freelance developer has come up with a novel Chrome extension Cowin Booking. The extension automatically books the vaccine slot in the nearest public health centre after filling the pop-up-auto-fill application form.
According to Kasture, the personal information asked during the registration is completely safe and that the information typed in the auto-fill application will not be saved nor sold to any third-party clients.
Sushrut on his GitHub account mentioned that the extension is not for commercial use. He further said that a lot of similar scripts are run by programmers to ensure quick booking but to avoid this privilege bias, he has developed this easy and user-friendly extension.
Although the health ministry has rejected the possibility of automated bookings, insisting that CoWin OTP and Captcha cannot be bypassed, many users have tried these plugins and claim that it has helped them get vaccine slots-even before filling the Captcha code.
RS Sharma, head of the CoWin platform had earlier informed that the system has undergone meticulous security testing and that no scripts can bypass OTP verification and Captcha to automatically register an individual.
