Tumkur: Mother, 3 others drown while trying to rescue boy from pond

Tumkur: In a tragic incident, four persons drowned while trying to rescue a boy who had fallen into a pond (Gokatte) near Siddaganga Matha here on Sunday afternoon.

Ranjith, a class 6 student, had slipped and fallen into the Gokatte when he had been there to wash his hands. On seeing this his mother and some friends jumped into the water to save him. Unfortunately, those who went to rescue met a watery grave.

The deceased have been identified as Rajith’s mother Lakshmi (33) from Bagalgunte in Bengaluru, his friends Shankar (11) and Harshith (11), and Mahadevappa (44) of Ajalapura in Yadgir district.

Miraculously, Ranjith survived and managed to reach ashore.

Sources said, Ranjith’s mother had come to see her son who was boarding at Siddaganga Matha for his studies.

As soon as the news of the incident came to light, Kyathasandra police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. All the bodies were recovered by evening.

District Deputy Commissioner Srinivas K, District Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar also rushed to the spot and coordinated search and rescue operations.

Kyathasandra police have registered a case in this regard and are investigating.
