Two fishermen lose life in separate incidents

Udupi: Two fishermen lost their lives in two separate incidents which happened at Malpe and Padubidri on Tuesday August 13. The deceased are identified as Sanjeeva Kotian (55) from Kapu Uliyargoly and Govardhan Kunder (42) from Udyavara Pitrody.

Sanjeeva had accompanied other fishermen on a fishing trip on a country boat lost his life after a huge wave violently heaved his boat about two kilometers away from the coast. The country boat ‘Katyayani’ was going towards Hejamadi from Malpe via Padubidri and Sanjeeva pulling in the fishnet near Padubidri when he lost his balance and fell into the sea as the boat bounced on the waves.

Although the other 20 or so fishermen aboard the boat managed to fish him out of the water, provide first aid and rush him to the district hospital at Ajjarkadu Udupi the doctors pronounced him to be brought dead. Padubidri police have registered a case of unnatural death in this regard.

Second incident

Govardhan was undertaking fishing in a trawl boat when he died. He had left the port aboard the trawler ‘Shivagiri’ on August 12. On Monday at around 12:30 pm in the afternoon, when the trawler was engaged in fishing near Malpe Light House, Mr Kunder suddenly collapsed unconscious.

The other fishermen aboard the vessel quickly shifted the unconscious fishermen to the government hospital where the doctors confirmed that the Govardhan had indeed breathed his last. Malpe police have registered a case in this connection.
