Bengaluru: A five-year-old boy and his one-and-a-half-year-old sister were killed when they accidentally fell into a sump in an under-construction residential building at Kodigehalli, K.R. Puram, on Thursday.

The deceased identified as Naveen and his sister Basamma used to reside in a makeshift shed near the building with their parents – Mallappa and Kavita – both of who are employed as construction labourers.

On the day of the incident, Mallappa was reportedly out of town and Kavita had gone to work. It is suspected that the children might have accidentally fallen into the sump while playing outside.

The incident came to light when Kavita came home around 1.30 p.m. and upon finding the children missing started to search for them. She then checked the sump upon noticing that the wooden planks had been moved. On hearing her cries for help, construction labourers living nearby rushed to the spot and pulled out the children. They were taken to a hospital where both were declared brought dead.

The KR Puram police have registered a case of unnatural death and investigations are on.
