Udupi: A 9-centimetre long worm in the eye of a 70-year-old woman was successfully removed on Sunday night.
The emergency surgery was conducted by Prasad Netralaya’s chief physician and Karnataka Rajyotsava and Nadoja awardee Dr Krishna Prasad.
The Malpe-resident woman had come to Prasad Netralaya on Tuesday, June with acute eye pain.
Tests revealed a worm in the woman’s eye. Immediately, Dr Prasad and other senior ophthalmologists in the Netralaya performed procedures to kill the worm as there was the threat that the worm could move to the brain.
The woman left for home after the pain subsided.
However, on Sunday morning she started feeling pain again and was brought to the Netralaya.
Dr Prasad and his team then decided to perform surgery and remove the worm.
The worm was later sent to a laboratory for further study.
