Udupi: In a noble gesture, a Asha worker cum auto driver has won accolades on social media after she drove a pregnant woman to a hospital 18 kms away from Pernankila village here at around 3 am on Thursday, July 23.
ASHA worker Rajivi received a call around 3 am that a pregnant woman, Srilatha was experiencing labour pain and had to be taken to a hospital. Soon after Rajivi drove to their place and got the lady admitted to the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Haji Abdulla Government Women and Children’s Hospital Udupi.
Srilatha delivered a girl baby on Thursday and both the child and the mother are healthy.
Rajivi learnt to drive auto from her husband. After the latter’s death she is working as an auto driver for her livelihood. She says that she works as an ASHA worker till noon and later she drives one of the autos owned by her. The other auto has been rented out.
Notably, Rajivi doen not charge any money for pregnant woman visiting hospitals for delivery. Their well-wishes itself is a big gift for me, she says.
