Udupi: An angry swarm of honeybees attacked students at Volakadu School on Tuesday after a student reportedly threw a stone at a beehive.

The incident took place around 3:30 PM when the bees, disturbed by the stone, swarmed and attacked children and parents on the school premises. A total of 40 students and an SDMC (School Development and Monitoring Committee) member were injured.

Among the injured, 37 students received first aid at the Ajjarkadu District Hospital and were discharged the same evening. Three other students sustained minor injuries and were admitted to the Women and Children’s Hospital. The SDMC member, who suffered multiple stings, has been placed under observation at the district hospital, according to District Surgeon Dr. Ashok.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) K. Ganapathi and municipal officials visited the school and assured appropriate action.

Students escape further harm

The school has a total of 590 students. As soon as the bee attack began, teachers ensured that students were sent to safe locations. Classroom doors were closed, allowing students and staff to escape the attack.

Students in the open school premises were the primary victims of the bee swarm. Local residents and SDMC members immediately transported the injured to the district hospital. The situation was brought under control by 5-6 PM, said the school’s headmistress, Poornima.
