Udupi DC hoists national; flag on the 73rd Independence Day celebration

Udupi: Deputy Commissioner of the district Hepshibha Rani Korlapati, hoisted the flag and received the guard of honour at Mahatma Gandhi memorial ground here on the occasion of the 73rd Independence Day celebration in Udupi on Thursday, August 15.
The DC addressed the gathering and said, “Today we need to remember Bal Gangadar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other freedom fighters who got punished and imprisoned. Women have also taken part in freedom struggle. Rani Abbakka fought against Portuguese. Kamaladevi Chattopadyaya, Umabai Kundapura, Mahadevi Tai Doddamani and many other women took part in the freedom struggle. In 1921, Jallianwala Bagh day was commemorated in Udupi. Kota Ramakrishna Karanth, Karkala Padhmanabha Kamath, Udupi Kubera Panduranga Raya and others left their job as advocates in response to the call of non-cooperation movement. Mahatma Gandhi had visited Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in 1927 and 1934.”
“Today, Udupi though being a coastal district is facing drought in summer season. The central government is association with state governments has initiated Jalashakthi Abhiyan to preserve water. The year 2019 has been declared as ‘Water Year’ in Karnataka. Udupi district has faced severe loss in the recent rains.”
“Rs 4 lakh compensation has been distributed to the families of victims. Another Rs 1 lakh will be distributed to these families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Government has released Rs 5 crore as compensation amount for flood and rain victims. To avoid scarcity of water in summer season, every individual should opt for rain water harvesting. The district administration is prepared to renew lakes and ponds.”
“In our district, many youths have lost their lives in road accidents. Public should cultivate the habit of following road safety measures. Udupi is a peaceful district. It is a house for education, banking, temples and many other things. Children should be taught to love their country. They should be proud about the rich and diversified culture of India,” said the DC.
2018-19 SSLC and PU examination toppers were felicitated on the occasion and laptops were gifted to SSLC top scorers.
Shankar Kulal, APC of the police department and Vasanth Kumar of fire and safety department wee honoured on the occasion for their notable service to their respective departments.
Although there was heavy rain, the students nonetheless performed the march past. The DC honoured the top performing teams of the march past parade.
Udupi SP Nisha James, Udupi zilla panchayat president Dinakar Babu, ZP CEO Sindhu B Roopesh, assistant district commissioner Vidya Kumari, ASP Kumarachandra, ASP, MLA Raghupathi Bhat and others were present.
