Udupi: Garbage black spots cleared after campaign gets good public response

Udupi: The Udupi Zilla panchayat’s initiative to identify and clear garbage dumps (black spots) in the district received a good response from the public.
People were asked to relay information via WhatsApp about garbage dumps in their area. As many as 55 such spots were identified by the public while the gram panchayats on their own had identified over 100 black spots. Later, the authorities swung into action to clear the same.
Apart from clearing the garbage, efforts were also taken to beautify the black spots at various places by planting flowering plants etc. Display boards to raise awareness among the public and CCTV too was installed as part of the exercise.
People responsible for littering were identified and were tasked with the job of cleaning the place apart from the imposition of monetary fines ranging from Rs 1000-2000.
Going ahead, the authorities are mulling to give rewards to people who provide photo evidence of people, vehicles throwing garbage by the roadside. The informants’ identities will be kept confidential.
Speaking about the initiative Dr Naveen Bhat, chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat stated that this is a continuous exercise and urged cooperation from people for information about the garbage black spots through WhatsApp No. 9483330564.
