Udupi: The Health Department is keeping a keen eye on Udupi district following a surge in cholera cases across the state. In response, local authorities had been instructed to implement preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease in the district.

However, selling fruits and food in the open in unhygienic conditions is still rampant.

Addressing the issue, the Health Department emphasized the importance of raising awareness among street vendors regarding cholera transmission through contaminated water and food. Specific attention was drawn to ice candies, street food, vegetables grown in unhygienic conditions, and fish sourced from polluted waters.

Traders are seen displaying cut fruits on carts in crowded areas to attract people. Sweets are also sold in open containers. These unsanitary practices have the potential to spread diseases by attracting flies and allowing dust.

One of the key directives issued by health officials is mandating street food vendors to maintain hygiene standards when handling food items. Instances of selling fruits and sweets in open conditions, often attracting dust and flies, were highlighted as potential breeding grounds for disease transmission.

Furthermore, the monitoring of hygiene practices among migrant workers, particularly in areas frequented by them such as the Udupi city bus stand and Beedinagudde, has been intensified. Concerns were raised over using unsanitary water and selling fried foods cooked in reused oil, posing significant health risks to consumers.

In light of these developments, adherence to the guidelines outlined by the Health Department is paramount, especially during the summer months. Health officials stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness in food consumption and personal hygiene practices. Individuals experiencing symptoms indicative of cholera or any other illness are urged to seek medical attention promptly.

Dr. I.P. Gadad, the District Health Officer of Udupi, emphasized the collective responsibility towards public health. He reiterated the Health Department’s commitment to implementing precautionary measures to safeguard the well-being.

“As the temperature rises, it becomes imperative to take proactive steps to protect public health. The Health Department, in collaboration with local authorities, remains vigilant in ensuring the safety of our residents,” stated Dr. Gadad.
