Udupi: Heavy rains continue, several areas submerged

Udupi: As heavy rain continued to pound the district on Friday, the Deputy Commissioner, Dr. K. Vidyakumari,  announced a holiday for all schools up to PUC for Saturday as a precautionary measure.

While the rain slightly subsided on Friday morning, it picked up intensity in the afternoon. Several houses in Kundapur and Byndoor taluks have been damaged. Homes in Amasebailu-Balmane areas have also been affected.

Floodwaters have yet to recede in areas like Navunda, Maravanthe, and Padukone. Many houses in various parts of Udupi taluk are submerged. More than 30 houses in Alevoor, Kemthur, and Udyavara have been inundated, and several people have been rescued. The Kallianpur river overflowed, submerging bridges and access roads, and flooding houses, fields, and gardens in Moodukudru and Nidamballi areas.

Continuous rains lashed Karkala, Ajekaru, Bailur, Mala, and Nitte regions. Over the past two days, more than 31 houses in the district have been reported damaged.

In the Halkur, Siddapura, and Gulwadi areas of Kundapur, areca nut plantations have suffered damage. The district recorded an average rainfall of 149.2 mm in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM on Friday.

Kaup: 35 People Relocated Due to Floods

In Kaup taluk, 35 people stranded by wind, rain, and floods have been relocated to safer places under the leadership of Tahsildar Dr. Pratibha R. The taluk administration, home guards, and local gram panchayats rescued the victims from areas including Katapadi Moodabettu, Yenagudde, Nadpal Padabettu, Padubidri Kallatte, and Hejamadi Shivanagar.

The tahsildar has advised contacting the taluk administration control room at 0820-2551444 in emergencies.

Over 250 Electric Poles Down

In the past two days, more than 250 electric poles have fallen, damaging 3.80 km of power lines. Fourteen transformers have failed, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs. 38 lakhs, according to MESCOM officials.

Fire Brigade Rescues 10 People

In Alevoor and Kemthur villages, the fire brigade rescued 10 people stranded by floodwaters. Fire and rescue teams, including two boats, are on standby in flood-prone areas, said District Fire Officer Vinayak Kalagutkar.

Karkala Records Highest Rainfall in State

In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM on Friday, Karkala’s Renjala and Neere gram panchayat areas recorded the highest rainfall in the state. Overall, Karkala taluk received an average of 201.7 mm of rain, with Renjala gram panchayat recording 272.5 mm and Neere gram panchayat 270 mm of rainfall.
