Udupi: Heavy rains and strong winds wreaked havoc at several places in the district on Tuesday night.
In the Manchikodi area of the city, There was a power outage since Tuesday evening as 7 to 8 electric poles fell over due to heavy winds. Locals alleged that the situation was not addressed despite several calls made to Mescom.
However, Mescom staff were seen fixing the uprooted power lines on Wednesday morning. Many poles were precariously leaning in flooded areas and roadsides, worrying locals.
At Udyavara Sampige Nagara, the house of Krishna Pojary near Alva Compound was flooded. The stormwater flowed into the residential property and nearby yards as the drain was blocked, creating artificial flooding in the area.
IMD had issued a Red Alert for the district on Tuesday warning residents of heavy downpours.
Meanwhile, Udupi’s Mudubella Subramanya State Highway project was executed without the implementation of an adequate drainage system, resulting in rainwater entering the houses situated along the roadside and causing flooding.
The water is not being able to drain properly, causing floods. In response, the local community has taken the initiative to use a JCB to facilitate the drainage of water.
The residents have expressed their frustration towards the contractors responsible for the highway construction, highlighting their failure to construct proper drains.
