Udupi: A man in Udupi lost Rs 10,71,938 lakh to unidentified cyber fraudsters after he paid the amount as a “processing fee” to avail Rs 11.5 lakh lottery money.
The victim identified as Adam Byari, a resident of Beejadi received a letter through the post on January 18. The envelope had a multi-colored scratch card and letters from Naaptol, an online store.
The letter asked him to scratch the card and call a WhatsApp number if he had won any gift. On scratching the lottery ticket, the complainant saw that he had won Rs 11.5 lakh.
As instructed, he gave a call to the WhatsApp number. The purported Naaptol executive told Adam that he must transfer money in phases to encash the amount.
Later, when Adam did not receive the promised amount, he realized that he had been cheated. He then filed a police complaint.
