Udupi: MLA K Raghupati Bhat on Friday said that he supports the government’s decision to provide eggs to schoolchildren as part of the mid-day meals program.

“It is not wrong to serve eggs to children at school, but there must be separate arrangements done to distribute the eggs. It must not be a problem to vegetarian students,” he said.

He further said that dropping the idea of including eggs in the midday meal just because others feel uncomfortable is not right.

Earlier, Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwaprasanna Theertha Swami had condemned the government’s decision to provide eggs to schoolchildren as part of the mid-day meals program.

He said, “It is an attempt to change the food culture. Every individual has a right to food.”

“Giving protein to children is good and they need it. You get protein in many vegetables as well. Protein is not just in eggs. This will lead to problems as far as our religious rituals are concerned and children will go astray. That is why we are saying the government should not do this. They could rather provide eggs to the homes of children who eat non-veg,” he added.
