A silent march was taken out by members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in collaboration with like-minded organizations in Mangaluru to protest the horrific gang rape and murder of a female medical student from Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College.
The protest march, starting from the IMA office and ending at DC office, saw participation of BJP MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr. Bharath Shetty, along with numerous doctors.
In solidarity with the national call from the Indian Medical Association’s Udupi Coastal branch, doctors across Udupi district announced that they will be closing their clinics and hospitals for 24 hours, excluding emergency services starting from 6 AM on August 17 until 6 AM on August 18. All medical institutions, including hospitals and private clinics, will participate in the shutdown, with emergency services being the only exception.
Rajalakshmi, President of the IMA Udupi Coastal branch, confirmed that over 250 doctors from the region will participate in the strike, suspending services in all hospitals and clinics except for emergencies.
