Udupi: Two migrant workers living in the district who had died due to COVID-19 and whose families could not come to claim their bodies were cremated by a local NGO, Nagarik Samiti.

Nityananda Olakadu, chief of the Samiti, organised the funeral of the two workers along with civic authorities at the crematory in Beedinagudde on Saturday.

A few days ago, a jewellery worker, living alone in a rented house near the Udupi MESCOM office, died of health complications. Another migrant worker who lived in a rented house in Nittur also died due to some ailments.

Both the dead bodies were transported to the district hospital by the Samiti where on testing it was found that they were infected with the novel coronavirus.

As the families of both the COVID-19 dead expressed helplessness to come and perform the funeral, the Samiti organised it themselves.

The Samiti had also performed the funerals of two other people on May 15.
