Udupi: Practicing Karate is a necessity for self-defense today, says Puthige Sri

Udupi: Karate is an art that enables us to protect ourselves. Regular practice of this skill is essential in today’s world, said  Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Sri Puthige Matha.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the 4th National Karate Championship, organized under the aegis of Sri Krishna Math, Udupi, and led by the Budokan Karate and Sports Association Karnataka (Budokan Karate International, Australia). The event was held on November 16 at Madhwa Mantapa, Sri Krishna Math, Udupi. The seer lit the ceremonial lamp, unveiled the championship trophies, and delivered his blessings in the presence of Pattada Kiriya Swamiji, and Sri Sushrindra Tirtha Swamiji.

Swamiji noted, “Sri Krishna was a master in warfare. Hosting such an extraordinary national-level karate competition in Krishna’s land is truly delightful. As mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, self-defense is essential, and everyone should engage in practicing such arts. May this championship be a success, and may Lord Krishna bless the organizing team and all participants.”

The event was presided over by Dr. N.B. Vijaya Ballal, Dharmadarshi of the Ambalpady Sri Janardhana and Mahakali Temple.

Prakash Malpe, honorary advisor of the Budokan Karate and Sports Association, delivered the introductory address, emphasizing the historical connection between Tulu Nadu and karate.

Several achievers in social, religious, sports, and educational fields were felicitated during the event, including senior karate instructor Prabhakar Kundar Malpe, Billava Seva Sangha (R) Malpe president Gopal C. Bangera, Sri Narayana Guru Urban Co-operative Bank vice president Vijaya G. Bangera, diving expert Ishwar Malpe, Billava Seva Sangha Ambalpady president Shivakumar Ambalpady, and social worker Harishchandra Ambalpady.

The event witnessed the presence of Udupi City Municipality president Prabhakar Poojari, Sri Krishna Math cultural secretary Ramesh Bhat, Budokan Karate and Sports Association president and organizer Vaman Palan, and several dignitaries from the karate community
