Udupi: A man who got engaged to a woman but later married another woman while keeping his engagement secret, has been accused of harassment by his fiancée, leading to a case being filed against him and five others.

The accused, Navaraj, who got engaged to Chaitra (36) of Handadi, Brahmavar, on June 23, 2024, allegedly concealed the engagement and married another woman Nandini on July 29, 2024. On September 5, he married Chaitra as well in a ceremony at Mother’s Palace, Brahmavar.

After marrying Chaitra, he took her to his residence in Sindigere, Lakya Hobli, Chikkamagaluru district, where she was reportedly subjected to physical and mental harassment. It is alleged that Navaraj, along with Jayanna S.D., Sundaramma, Amrutha, and Pavithra, confined her to the house, prohibited her from speaking to neighbours, physically assaulted her, and demanded Rs 2 lakh. She was also threatened with dire consequences if she revealed his marriage to Nandini.

Navaraj’s friend Kiran, who reportedly knew about the marriage to Nandini but allegedly helped facilitate the second marriage, has also been named in the complaint. A case has been registered at the Women’s Police Station.
