Udupi temple jewellery robbery case: Accused convicted, face imprisonment and fine

Udupi: The city court here have pronounced the verdict in the case of the robbery of temple jewelry, awarding imprisonment and a fine to the accused individuals involved.

Narasimha Raju, alias Basavaraj, and Mohammed Shabbir were found guilty of the crime.

The incident dates back to September 21, 2015, when the sanctum sanctorum door lock of Sri Mahalasa Narayani Devi temple, located in Shiruru village, Udupi taluk, was forcibly broken. The perpetrators managed to steal a substantial amount, totaling Rs 8,66,800, along with approximately 339.940 grams of gold belonging to the temple.

The efforts of the police sub-inspector of Udupi station led to the registration of a case against the accused. Subsequently, a comprehensive charge sheet was prepared and presented to the court for further legal proceedings.

Following a thorough trial and the successful establishment of the charges against the accused, the Chief CJ and Judge Deepa, presiding over the JMFC Court, delivered the verdict. Narasimha Raju alias Basavaraj and Mohammed Shabbir were sentenced to 2 years and 6 months of imprisonment. Additionally, a fine of Rs 5,500 was imposed on each of the convicted individuals as part of the penalty.

During the trial, Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor Jayanthi K. represented the government’s interests, diligently arguing the case on behalf of the prosecution.
