Udupi: A woman in Udupi lost Rs 15.33 lakh to unidentified cyber fraudsters after she paid the amount as “services charges” to avail Rs 14.8 lakh lottery money.
The victim identified as Poornima received a letter through the post. The envelope had a multi-colored scratch card and letters from Naaptol, an online store.
The letter asked her to scratch the card and call a WhatsApp number if she had won any gift. On scratching the lottery ticket, the complainant saw that she had won Rs 14.8 lakh.
As instructed, she gave a call to the WhatsApp number. The purported Naaptol executive told Poornima that she must transfer money in phases to encash the amount.
Later, when Poornima did not receive the promised amount, she realized that she had been cheated. She then filed a police complaint.
