Udupi: A woman in Udupi was duped of Rs 6.91 lakh by a cyber fraudster claiming to be a doctor wanting to send her a gift.

In September, the woman allegedly received an Instagram message from a stranger claiming to be a doctor in Scotland.

They began to chat on Whatsapp and he claimed that he would be sending her a gift.

A few days later, she received a call from a stranger saying he was calling from the Delhi Airport. The man allegedly demanded money from her saying the amount was required to be paid as fees and taxes to convert Pounds into Indian rupees.

The woman transferred Rs 6,91,000 to the accused.

However, even after several days, the woman did not receive her ‘gift’. She then called on the numbers but the so-called official did not pick up after which she called the doctor (fraud) who too did not respond.

She finally approached the police and a case was registered.
