Malpe: A women’s kayaking expedition was held at the Malpe beach as part of the International Women’s Day celebration, stretching from the Beach to the island of Saint Mary’s.
The expedition was held under the auspices of General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure, district administration, zilla panchayat, district Youth Empowerment and Sports Department and Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Postgraduate Centre.
About 25 students from the Sports Residential School, Government Women’s First Grade College, reached Saint Mary’s island after kayaking for about 4-5 hours.
Speaking on the occasion, Roshan Kumar, Assistant Director of the Sports and Youth Empowerment Department said that 2 acres of land have been earmarked for a branch of the General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure at Malpe-Padukare where various types of residential training programs will be provided.
“For the first time, a sea kayaking expedition was organized. During last year’s women’s day celebration a 110 kilometre long 7-day kayaking expedition was organized. This year’s kayaking expedition was organized to raise awareness among women of adventure sports. Though the sea waves and winds made the expedition difficult, the students were enthusiastically involved,” said Dinesh Suvarna, chief instructor of the academy.
