Chikamagaluru: A farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Gopala village in Tarikere Taluk on Wednesday.
The deceased farmer has been identified as Mahesh, aged 45. He had one acre of areca nut farm in the village. Mahesh had borrowed loan of Rs. 40000 from Vijaya Bank at Karakucchi and another loan of Rs. 1.4 lakh from another bank. He had pledged gold jewellery for the loan he had taken for farm activities.
This year, because of low rainfall, the areca nut tress dried up. Unable to clear his loans, Mahesh hanged himself from the ceiling of the cattle shed at around 3 pm on Wednesday.
The Lakkavalli police registered an unnatural death report. Mahesh’s wife Sudha informed the police that her husband had a debt of Rs.4 lakh.
