Belagavi: Members of Dalit organizations in large numbers held a protest against Union minister Ananth Kumar Hegde wearing black bands as he entered Belagavi to participate in an event on Monday.
When the union minister’s vehicle reached the venue in Belagavi, hundreds of dalit activists rushed towards the vehicle and held a protest against him. The police managed to arrest everyone by taking them away in a bus.
Similar situation of Dalit’s protesting wearing black band took place at Basaveshwar circle in Gokak too when Ananth kumar went to attend a party function. However, the protest was not much anxious as the police managed to arrest the leaders and activists in Gokak before the protest turned tense.
A tight security of police was appointed to maintain peace at the venue thereafter.
The reason for the protest was Mr.Hegde’s recent statements on amending the constitution. According to the activists his statements insulted the Dalit community. The protesters also demanded the minister to resign from his post.
