The US ambassador to South Korea has shaved off his controversial mustache, saying it was too uncomfortable when wearing a mask as part of coronavirus measures.

Harris was earlier accused of high-handedness and his facial hair became an issue of debate. His mother was a Japanese and Koreans are still bitterly resentful of Tokyo’s 1910-45 colonisation of the peninsula.

They claimed that Harris’s moustache indicated to the fashions of imperial governors-general from the period.

Earlier, Harris said that grooming was a matter of personal choice, now, recently he uploaded a video to social media of him getting the moustache shaved off at a traditional Korean barbershop

Harris says he did so to keep cool in the Seoul summer, while wearing a mask
