Uttara Kannada dist: Health dept successful in containing Monkey disease

Honnavara: Between winter and monsoon 91 people in the district tested positive for the Monkey disease. Of these only one died.
The patients were treated at local taluk hospitals, while those in critical condition were taken to Manipal’s Kasturba Hospital. Their expenses were borne by the government.
The disease was reported from the district’s Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Siddapur, Joida and Sirsi taluks
The health department immediately took to the task to contain the disease and were successful in it.
145 monkeys were found dead in the district. Autopsies on 24 carcasses were performed, one carcass was found positive. 29 ticks were also collected, none of them was positive. 764 blood samples were collected 91 among them tested positive.
The department distributed 2,38,300 pamphlets and 4,505 IECs. Teachers were trained in all taluks. 46,872 bottles of DMP oil were delivered, 593 kg of malathion was stocked, 50 thousand vaccine cards were prepared, 7,138 ticks were killed and 54,457 livestock with ticks were treated.
In addition, a total of 49,140 doses of the vaccine were distributed.
It was also decided that next year all residents in the area with a high risk of Monkey disease will be persuaded to get the vaccine.
