A single tweet by American pop star Rihanna on the farmer protests in India has led to a perfect storm. The Indian government, backed by Bollywood and sports stars, is trying to fight a deluge of support from Hollywood stars, social media influencers, and international politicians

The Barbados born American pop star started a chain reaction with her six-word tweet linking to a CNN article: “Why aren’t we talking about this?!” After that, the world spoke of little else. The star has a track record of using social media to amplify selected causes and events — Black Lives Matter, the Beirut bombings, the Myanmar coup, among others.

Reaction from Indians was swift. Many thanked the star for bringing up the farmers’ protest in an international forum. Others, led by Hindi film personality Kangana Ranaut (3M followers on Twitter), were less than polite.
