Famous comedian and veteran actor, Jagdeep, passed away at the age of 81 due to health-related issues. He was best known for his role of Soorma Bhopali that he played in the 1975 film Sholay
He was born on 29 March 1939 and was married three times. Famous comedians, Javed and Naved Jaffrey are his sons.
Here are some lesser known facts about Jagdeep
1.Jagdeep’s real name was ‘Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaffrey’ and was born in Datia, Madhya Pradesh
2.Jagdeep’s father died at the time of partition and his mother struggled to meet ends for her children. Jagdeep dropped out of school at a young age and started selling soap on the road.
3.Javed Jafrrey once said that his father, Jagdeep was chosen from the streets to star in a film as a child actor and that he was destined to be in the industry
4.Jagdeep started his career as a child artist in the film ‘Afsana’.
5.It was decided that he will be given three rupees as a fee for the role but it was doubled when the actor got to say a dialogue.
6.Jagdeep portrayed the iconic role of Soorma Bhopali in the movie Sholay.
7.In 1988, he directed a film titled Soorma Bhopali, which was based on his own character from Sholay.
8.He played memorable roles in ‘Purana Mandir’ and in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ as Salman Khan’s father.
9.He was awarded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India for his film Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke
10.Jagdeep has acted in over 400 films and is also known for his appearances in several horror movies, mainly in projects of the Ramsay Brothers.
