Mangaluru: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Hindu Jagarana Vedike leaders have issued a one-month ultimatum to the district administration to curb the illegal transport and slaughter of cows. Failure to do so will result in district-wide protests.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Bhaskar Rao Bal, President of VHP Suratkal Division, highlighted the presence of a significant beef mafia operating in the district. He urged the district administration to take immediate action to dismantle these operations.

Recently, Bajrang Dal activists informed the police about an illegal slaughterhouse in Krishna Pura 8th Block, Suratkal. The police raid resulted in the seizure of hundreds of kilograms of beef and 19 cattle. However, due to the lack of arrests and further action, the operators of these slaughterhouses remain unafraid. A planned protest in Suratkal was called off after police assured swift closure of the slaughterhouses, Rao added.

Rao emphasized the need to trace the origins of the seized cattle and identify the buyers of the beef for prosecution. He also demanded the seizure of vehicles used to transport the cattle and the confiscation of buildings housing illegal slaughterhouses.

Widespread Illegal Slaughterhouses

The leaders also highlighted the existence of illegal slaughterhouses in areas such as Suratkal, Jokatte, and Tannirbavi. They stressed the need for surveillance to break the network involved in bringing cattle to these slaughterhouses and transporting the meat.

Furthermore, they pointed out that several licensed meat shops within the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate jurisdiction are selling beef, and some hotels are reportedly serving dishes made from beef. They called for stricter monitoring of these establishments.

The leaders urged the administration to take immediate steps to address these issues and ensure the enforcement of laws to protect cows.
