Vijayapura: A bandh was called in Vijayapura district by various organizations demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following his alleged derogatory remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
The bandh, led by Dalit, progressive, and Ahinda organizations along with Ambedkarite groups, has resulted in disruptions across the city.
Public transport services, including buses, have been halted, and shops in the market areas are closed. The bandh has gained widespread support from workers’ unions, farmers, students, and other organizations.
In light of the protests, all schools and colleges in Vijayapura have declared a holiday for the day. Additionally, liquor sales have been banned throughout the district.
The police department has deployed additional security measures in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.
Bus services from the central bus station have been suspended since morning, though some buses are still operating on the bypass and ring roads. Auto-rickshaws and motorcycles are rarely seen on the roads.
While most shops in the market areas are closed, street vendors selling flowers and fruits have not faced any issues. Protestors have also planned a large rally, starting from Siddeshwara Temple and heading towards the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle.
Leaders and activists from various parts of the district are gathering to join the march in support of the bandh.
