Vitla: Two persons were arrested for illegal cattle smuggling at Kollapada in Poonacha village, police said.

According to Vitla police, the duo was arrested during a routine traffic check at a public bus stand at Kollapada.

The accused — identified as Narayan Naika and Santhosh Kumar — were transporting a male calf in an Omni van without requisite documents.

Police said that the calf was being transported using cruel means by stuffing the bovine in the cramped space of the car with its limbs and neck bound with ropes. The animal was allegedly being illegally taken to Kerala for slaughter.

The calf was rescued and the Omni car was confiscated. The total value of the seized property is estimated to be Rs 1.52 lakh, police added.
