Mangaluru: A seven-month-old pup that was found trapped in a drum of tar near MRPL E-Gate at Bajpe has got a new breath of life thanks to the rescue efforts of Animal Care Trust volunteers.
The pup, now named ‘Daamaru’, is believed to have been stuck in the drum for over a day and all its efforts to come out of the drum proved futile. But Daamaru’s grit to survive the ordeal is worth a mention. While many others would have conceded defeat, Daamaru kept on her struggle until it was finally noticed by a passerby, Yousuf on September 7.
Moved by the pup’s plight Yousuf made necessary arrangements for the dog to be taken to the Animal Care Trust (ACT) shelter located at Shaktinagar here. No sooner did he arrive at the shelter, the volunteers here started the work of removing the tar that coated his entire body.
The task was rendered more difficult since the tar had solidified on Daamaru’s body. The volunteers, however, worked patiently to remove every scrap of the thick black tar on Daamaru’s body by massaging in vegetable oil and removing clumps of tar as it came loose. The first priority of the volunteers was to remove the tar stuck on Daamru’s face and mouth so that it could be fed.
The process was a time consuming one as continuous rubbing can get irritating for an animal. After oil massage sessions that lasted for nearly 12 hours, spanning over two-day period Daamaru was finally freed from its tary cage.
Later Daamaru was given a coconut oil massage to aid in the healing process followed by a bath in the evening. The transformation seen in Daamaru – from a weak and immobile pup to a lively and happy one – is a remarkable one indeed. The shelter will put him up for adoption after he recovers fully.
Currently, Daamaru is sheltered at the Trust premises and has recovered from the trauma completely.
Speaking to Udayavani, Tauseef Ahmed, rescue in-charge with Animal Care Trust (ACT) informed that Yousuf has assured to take care of Daamaru, in case no one adopts him.
