Bantwal: With the water level dropping to 5.27 meters at Thumbay vented dam as of April 21st, there is daily drop of about 5 cm occurring in water level here.
Water pumping for the city is being carried out as per usual and no direction has come from Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to stop the pumping, inform sources from the plant.
Amidst this, the locals have informed that visit to the pumping station has been banned. However, sources from the department state that the ban is only on those visiting unnecessarily, while there is no blockade on those coming on duty.
Since there is no water inflow in the river and the resultant drop in water level, it is now easier to cross the river at Jakribettu, Navoor and Shamboor areas, inform the locals.
With the fall in the water flow along the river and water storage, taking bath in the river and washing clothes there has become a common instance. Public have expressed anger against those involved in using minor explosives to catch fish in river water trapped in low lying areas and thereby destroying fingerlings.
