Mangaluru: Facing a dwindling water supply from the Tumbe reservoir, the district administration in Mangaluru has decided to implement drinking water rationing in the city starting May 5. As per the new arrangement, water will be provided to the city on alternate days.
The decision was made during a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority, chaired by District Collector Mullai Mugilan, held at the Mangaluru City Corporation on Friday. The meeting aimed to address water scarcity in the city.
As a result, measures have been implemented to provide available water to both Mangalore City Region (Mangalore South) and Suratkal Region (Mangalore North) on alternate days.
District Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan emphasized the importance of conserving water resources. He also stressed the need to crack down on wasteful water usage, stating that fines would be imposed on those found wasting water.
“Adequate water supply should be ensured everywhere,” the DC instructed the MCC Commissioner.
The scarcity of water has been attributed to the lack of rainfall and rising temperatures in the region. “The problem of water is starting due to a lack of rain and an increase in temperature. The public should practice good behavior without wasting water unnecessarily and create awareness among the people about the importance of water,” the DC said.
The DC said that control rooms for solving water problems have already been opened, and the problems coming from the public to these control rooms should be solved immediately, and an appropriate schedule should be prepared for water rationing.
