Amid the anti-CAA/NRC protest, 82-year-old Bilkis sat with hundreds of women under a canopied tent at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh for over three months.
Now, TIME magazine has included Bilkis in its list of “The 100 Most Influential People of 2020.”
Bilkis became one of the prominent faces of the protest for her sheer resistance despite her age. She was one among the many women who would walk from their houses in the nearby localities and sit in protest all day into the night at Shaheen Bagh.
The Indian government had passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill in December 2019, which had led to a series of protests across the country.
On December 15, 2019, a group of 10-15 women occupied a half-kilometre stretch of the Kalindi Kunj Road that connects Delhi and Noida
Over the next few days, Bilkis became the face of the protest and was later known as “Dadi of Shaheen Bagh”
